In Sunday's Emmy Awards opening, Eugene Levy took aim at one of the night's biggest winners.
Co-hosting the ceremony with his real-life son, Dan Levy, the "Schitt's Creek" star saved his best jab for "The Bear," FX's hit series set in the Chicago restaurant world. Over its three seasons, audiences and critics have scratched their heads over whether the ultra-serious show should be considered a "comedy."
"'The Bear' is nominated for 23 Emmys tonight, making it the most nominated comedy in history," Eugene said. "Now, I love the show, I love the show, and I know some of you will be expecting us to make a joke about whether 'The Bear' is really a comedy. But in the true spirit of 'The Bear,' we will not be making any jokes."

The father-son duo made quips about everyone from Sabrina Carpenter to Colin Farrell throughout their monologue, as well shows including "Baby Reindeer" and "Shōgun." They also remarked on the heartening queer representation on TV this past season.

"You know, son, I'm particularly proud of my streamer Apple TV+, which continues to proudly and visibly align itself with the LGBTQ community," Eugene joked earnestly.
"That's not what the plus stands for," Dan deadpanned.
The actors also quipped about their on- and off-screen relationship, having co-starred in six seasons of "Schitt's Creek" together. The offbeat family sitcom won nine Emmys throughout its run, including outstanding comedy series.
"It's good to be back by your side," Eugene told Dan on stage. "You know, this is a very special night for me. I've played a lot of dads in my day. I was a dad in 'American Pie' I was the dad in 'Finding Dory,' our show 'Schitt's Creek.' But without question, my most rewarding dad role ever has been being your dad ... in 'Schitt's Creek.' Because it got me my first acting Emmy."
